Ever wondered what biostimulants or biopesticides are?
There is no such thing as a biostimulant, but a very heterogenous group of very different active ingredients or raw materials from a variety of origins with specific effects on plants. This fact poses a challenge for companies when trying to define quality analysis or assess market sizes and product positioning.
Definition of biostimulants for EU
Following the EU regulation 2019/1009 ¨Plant biostimulant¨ means a product stimulating plant nutrition processes independently of the product’s nutrient content with the sole aim of improving one or more of the following characteristics of the plant or the plant rhizosphere:
- tolerance to abiotic stress
- availability of confined nutrients in soil or rhizosphere
- nutrient use efficiency
- Quality traits
Definition of Biological Plant Protection Products for Europe
Biopesticides are regulated under Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009.
They follow closely the registration guidelines set for standard pesticides although the risk is much lower with biopesticides. Demand is growing strongly but regulatory constraints limit availability on the EU market. IBMA is working on regulatory issues for the EU.
